CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ONE HEALTH PASTORAL INITIATIVE
The One Health Pastoral Initiative (OHPI) focuses on key areas aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote the well-being of pastoralist communities. One of them is,
The Promotion of Peace: OHPI is committed to fostering a peaceful and inclusive society where pastoralists can freely practice their activities. This effort aligns with UN SDG 16, aiming to reduce violence and safeguard the freedoms of pastoralists.
Education: To promote quality education, OHPI targets the education of pastoralist girls and other children of school-going age. In line with SDG 4, OHPI focuses on providing school assistance to girls and seeks funds to improve educational facilities, ensuring better access to education.
Access to Civil Services: OHPI aims to facilitate access to civil registration documentation, such as national identity cards, birth certificates, and marriage certificates. The goal is to ensure pastoralists fully exercise their rights and freedoms.
Conflict Management: OHPI’s primary objective in conflict management is to promote peaceful coexistence between pastoralists and their crop-farming neighbours. Through sensitization
campaigns and capacity-building activities, OHPI educates the target population on conflict management techniques and resolution, fostering peaceful cohabitation at the community level.
Food Security: Aligned with SDG 2—Zero Hunger—OHPI strives to ensure that pastoralist communities have access to food and improved nutrition. By promoting the production of quality food that easily grows in each region and enhancing animal breeding practices, OHPI aims to adopt sustainable agricultural practices to boost production capacity.
This holistic approach by OHPI aims to uplift pastoralist communities, ensuring their development and integration into broader societal frameworks while maintaining harmony and promoting sustainable practices.
