OHPI - One Health Pastoral Initiative
Sustaining pastoralism is at the heart of OHPI. We focus on post-transhumance livestock management to promote healthy, resilient animals and sustainable grasslands. Our approach addresses both the positive impacts of transhumance—such as animal growth, environmental sustainability, and preservation of traditional practices—and the challenges, like resource conflicts, livestock loss, and environmental degradation.
By blending traditional knowledge with modern practices, OHPI enables pastoralist communities to manage livestock sustainably, protect ecosystems, and create a peaceful coexistence between pastoralists and other land users.
Through OHPI, pastoralists receive guidance on effective post-transhumance practices, including:

APPROACH
We believe the best way to create sustainable growth is by working closely with pastoralists and local communities to address animal health and disease prevention. We empower communities by equipping pastoralists with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary. Recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, we adopt a holistic approach, focusing on disease prevention rather than just treatment. We offer capacity-building training and promote best practices. We partner with local organizations and stakeholders to foster a multi-sectoral approach to address complex issues surrounding animal health and disease prevention. As a result, OHPI’s programs have helped many pastoralists save the lives of their animals.
TRANSFORMATIONAL GOALS
We work closely with local, national, and international partners to reduce animal mortality rates among livestock through improved disease prevention and management practices. At the same time, we improve human health outcomes by reducing the incidence of zoonotic diseases among pastoralists, improving animal health and well-being by increasing access to veterinary care, improving nutrition, and reducing stress. This leads to increased pastoralist income through improved livestock productivity and market access and promotes sustainable land use practices and water management among pastoralists.
OHPI strengthens the capacity of pastoralist communities to manage their development, enhances social cohesion by reducing conflicts over resources, and promotes gender equality by encouraging the participation of women in decision-making processes. In every step, we use our guiding principles to achieve our mission, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
