One Health Pastoral Initiative
Cameroon,
January 20, 2025
Under the guidance of Prof. Yaouba Saidou, the One Health Pastoral Initiative (OHPI) has tackled a range of challenges faced by pastoral communities. This effort aligns with Law No. 006 of April 16, 2001, which sets out regulations for livestock diseases considered contagious. MINEPIA, tasked with protecting livestock through sanitary measures, has found a strong ally in OHPI, established to support the often-overlooked pastoralists.
Throughout 2024, OHPI engaged in several key activities to address the complex challenges pastoralists face in the 21st century. These efforts included;
Combating Goat Disease
OHPI's significant efforts in 2024 included fighting goat diseases, a major threat to livestock. The year saw 450 goats affected and 320 fatalities.
Curbing Animal Theft
Animal theft, a constant menace for pastoralists, was met with collaborative efforts between OHPI, local law enforcement, and community leaders. Workshops were held to educate pastoralists on securing their livestock and the importance of promptly reporting thefts.
Veterinary Education
OHPI organized veterinary education sessions covering disease prevention, treatment methods, and the significance of regular veterinary check-ups. These sessions aimed to improve livestock management practices and overall herd health.
Addressing Cattle Blindness
Cattle blindness, often resulting from nutritional deficiencies and diseases, was another critical issue. OHPI provided resources and guidance, leading to improved eye health among cattle. In 2024, 720 cattle were affected, with 415 fatalities.
Mental Health Awareness
Recognizing mental health challenges, OHPI launched awareness campaigns to address stress and anxiety among pastoralists, offering support systems for those in need.
Role of traditional rulers in the Muslim Community**
Traditional leaders, or Ardos, played a crucial role in facilitating communication between OHPI and pastoralists, ensuring community needs were addressed and fostering trust and collaboration.
Additional activities included promoting bee farming to diversify livelihoods, addressing the Mpox virus, and conducting extensive vaccination campaigns. In the West region, OHPI achieved a vaccination coverage rate of 94.81%, with 66,467 cattle vaccinated out of 70,100.Despite these successes, pastoralists faced several challenges in 2024, including climate change, resource competition, economic pressure, health issues, infrastructure deficiencies, and geopolitical instability. These challenges underscored the need for targeted interventions and support to enhance resilience and sustainability.
